Ten - "I'm sure I could get him into trouble"
Mehlis frowned slightly at Garren's back as he walked away. Things had been going well since the day at the training yard when he'd kissed her. He'd been making an effort not to be so frustrating, but then last night while they'd been talking another Mo'ani had joined them and begun talking about Nahtan's march from Edgewind to Olorun and the battle at the plateau. She couldn't be certain he'd done it on purpose, but part of her thought he had just to try to keep Garren from her. Maybe he had a sister who was eager to meet him, so he was trying to push Garren away from her, hoping she'd give up and leave him alone. She knew the other Mo'ani had seen them kissing occasionally.
Having a little time by the end of her day, she went to the inn, hoping Xia would be there before getting ready to dance. She leaned her head against the wall, knocking quietly on the door. After a moment, she heard the latch unlock, then Xia opened the door.
"I thought that was your knock," she smiled at her, then frowned. "What is it?" She stepped back as Mehlis came into the room.
"I give up," Mehlis said, sitting in one of the chairs. "You get me all to yourself. No more trying to make new friends here or even thinking about anything else." She didn't like feeling defeated, but she didn't know how to keep fighting for Garren anymore. Every moment with him felt so right, and he'd given hints he felt the same way, but no matter what she tried, things kept coming between them. "Maybe we should go to Olorun or even back to Kamir."
Xia stood in front of her, staring at her. "This isn't you, Mehlis," she said, her tone worried. "You don't give up. You fight no matter what you're standing against."
"I know how to beat those enemies," she said. "Tabari, Leneth and Leyra taught me how to beat them when they're inside me and I know how to beat enemies with my swords. But no matter how hard I try, or what I do, Garren won't let me in. I've tried to figure out what triggers it, and it's completely random, there's no correlation I can find between anything." She slumped back in her chair. "So I can't fight something I don't know how to or that keeps changing the rules. I give up."
Xia frowned, then sighed quietly. She came and leaned over, kissing Mehlis. She reached over and picked up a veil from the table, and as she stood up, she started moving her hips, each sway and turn deliberately enticing.
"Now you're trying to distract me," Mehlis accused her.
"So what if I am?" Xia asked her. She turned her back to Mehlis, and Mehlis watched her hips in her silk skirt. Xia pulled her tunic off, and Mehlis' eyes moved over the smooth skin on her back.
